Entertainment and Handling Specialty

Need an automated solution for your theatre’s newest sensation?

Heavy-duty, custom equipment isn’t only found in manufacturing and assembly operations. Though these do make up the lion’s share of where Handling Specialty’s material handling work ends up, a company that has been customizing massive and complicated equipment to build tier 1 companies’ products is also a great place to turn for other industries.

Utilizing a company’s experience and talent where large, customized moving equipment is required is an excellent thought when an unconventional industry is looking to up its game. Entertainment is one of those industries Handling Specialty services.  At first glance, it might seem the two are strange bedfellows, but when you consider the amount of engineering that goes into a fully moveable stage system, you start to see the reasoning behind it.

The first entertainment job Handling undertook was 2.5 years in the making and was installed by Handling Specialty, making it the company’s first Turn-key project in the entertainment industry. Now in operation, wowing fans from all over the world for over 20 years, this Cirque du Soleil show runs daily in Las Vegas. The entire concept was captivating, and Handling Specialty stepped up to deliver exactly what the renowned theatre company asked for an underwater stage lifting system with multiple moving parts. Yes, we’re talking about the ‘O’ show at the Bellagio. But this was just the first of Handling’s entertainment opportunities. After the success of the ‘O’ show, Cirque went on to hire Handling to design and build the stage systems for the Michael Jackson show at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

In 2005 we completed another underwater stage system for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines on the first of many ships to include this new Aqua-theatre. We`re completing our fifth stage system for the company today.

In 2010 we completed a massive underwater stage system for the Franco Dragone Entertainment Group’s The House of Dancing Water in Macau. This build featured a 270-degree theatre-in-the-round housing, the world’s largest commercial pool, which is 160 feet in diameter, 26 feet deep and holds 3.7 million gallons of water.

Very recently, a new project through Cirque du Soleil has been won where a large rotating stage system will be installed into a Theatre-in-the-Round setting at a themed resort complex in Mexico.

Building for live entertainment like the above examples has given our engineers, designers, technical salespeople, operations and services departments all the experience required to place technologically advanced heavy equipment into the exciting world of the performing arts. During every design, the safety of the performers is paramount, while the robustness of the equipment and all of its functions remain top of mind for Handling Specialty.
